Sacred Stories: Youth Faith Formation in an Interfaith World

The 2010 Youth in Mission Conference for Youth Ministry Workers

April 12-13, 2010

Keynote Speaker: Hannah McConnaughay, Program Associate in the Outreach Education and Training Department of the Interfaith Youth Core

Keynote Address:

“Youth Ministry in the 21st Century: Navigating Religious Diversity and Identity”

The United States is the most religiously diverse country in the world, and youth today have more contact with people different from them than any generation in history.  Interaction with non-Christians is a fact of life for young Christians.  How can the church’s leaders respond to this reality effectively? How can we teach young people to be Christians in the world, and not just in the church? This talk will share the most effective methods for engaging religious diversity while encouraging youth to deepen their own faith – service, identifying shared values, and storytelling – and explore the ways youth workers can equip young people to be interfaith leaders as well as Christian disciples.

“Through the Interfaith Youth Core I was able to learn about the many different belief systems that exist, ideologies and philosophies people have that are absolutely amazing.…It has changed me completely, it made me much more open-minded and accepting of others’ beliefs and traditions, teaching me to accept and embrace diversity in its fullest.” ~Silvia, age 17
